Important Building / Plumbing notice

Some changes have been made to legislation governing the Plumbing Industry relating to the Certificate of Compliance.

The SA Qualifications Authority Board’s (SAQA) has recognised the pluming industry registration board (PIRB) as a professional body and all plumbers must be registered with them.  SANS (South African National Standards Authority) has therefore issued an update to SANS 10254.  The most important change is the following:

Plumbers are required to issue a PIRB Certificate of Compliance (CoC) to the Insured (or relevant body) for all work they perform on geysers.

Going forward:

  •  All manufacturers have been instructed to supply energy efficient geysers.  They have thicker insulations preventing heat loss and reducing electricity consumption.
  •  After 15/9/2018 only NRCS compliant geysers which are B-rated energy efficient geysers will be installed.
  • These B-rated geysers are subject to the requirements of SANS 10254.  Certificate of Compliance for these geysers will therefore be required.

Should clients make use of their own plumber in case of emergency, they must insure that a CoC Certificate from the plumber is obtained.  This should then be forwarded together with the invoice to your broker/insurer.  Should a CoC certificated not being issued the Insurer may endorse the client’s policy.

This is now legislation and applicable to all insurers/clients.
